Stop Snoring Exercises

Stop snoring exercises may be beneficial to oneself or even one’s partner. It may seem like a tedious activity, but just imagine what it would feel like for you and your loved one to have a peaceful nights rest. With each exercise that you perform, the muscles in the throat and back of the mouth are strengthened. This will help you to stop snoring, as snoring is caused by weak or relaxed muscles and soft tissue in the mouth. If you are overweight, the first goal would be to loose some of the excess fat in the body, and this may cause a reduction in snoring.

There are several different types of exercises that you can perform to stop snoring. Your partner may get a good chuckle while you perform these exercises, but it may help you sleep better with less noise.

This first exercise should be performed just before bed and involves the movement of the lower jaw. Begin by sitting in an upright position and ensure the back is straight. Move your lower jaw as far forward as you can away from the upper jaw. Your teeth in the lower jaw should be far away from the upper jaw. Continue to move your lower jaw until you feel a strain in the neck. Now hold this position for about 15 seconds, release and repeat ten times. After the last repetition, move your jaw from side to side to relax.

Thereafter, place your hands on your face with your palms touching your cheeks and the thumbs under the lower jaw. Using your thumbs exert pressure on you lower jaw, while trying to open your jaw. The thumbs should act as a resistance and make it difficult for to open each time. Continue to do with increasing frequency for about sixty seconds. Perform these exercises a few minutes each night just before going to sleep. In addition, remember to raise your pillow about six inches above the surface of your bed and sleep on either side. Continue to do these exercises and you or your partner should notice a reduction in your snoring.

Another stop snoring exercise involves chewing gum. However, you need to chew it with your mouth closed and try and hum from your throat at the same time. You only need to perform this exercise for ten seconds, but the effects are dramatic.

This exercise you could probably do with your kids. Smile as big and as wide as you can and say “cheese.” Hold it for five seconds and repeat for five times, for another effective way to stop snoring.

These exercises are aimed at strengthening the throat muscles. If any of these muscles are in fact strengthened, it will benefit the snorer. However, these exercises will only benefit mild to moderate snorers. If this approach does not help, it best to use an anti snoring device or visit your primary care physician.
